NUMBER OF FOREIGN VISITORS IN JAPAN REACHED 3 MILLION (ESTIMATED FIGURE AS OF APRIL 2024)
In April, the number of foreign visitors to Japan reached 3,042,900, marking a 56.1% increase compared to the same month last year and a 4.0% increase compared to April 2019. The surge in visitors was driven by the spring cherry blossom season and the increase in travel demand from Southeast Asia and the Middle East following the end of Ramadan.
This marks the second consecutive month that the number of visitors surpassed 3 million. The cumulative total for the year up to April exceeded 10 million, reaching 11,601,200.The increase in visitors was particularly notable from South Korea in East Asia, Indonesia in Southeast Asia, and the United States in the Western and Middle Eastern regions. Of the 23 markets analyzed, 14 markets (South Korea, Singapore, Indonesia, Vietnam, India, Australia, the United States, Canada, Mexico, the United Kingdom, France, Germany, Italy, and the Middle East) recorded the highest number of visitors for April on record. Additionally, France, Italy, and the Middle East set new single-month records.
In line with the Fourth Basic Plan for the Promotion of Tourism Nation established in March last year, which emphasizes the pillars of “sustainable tourism,” “expanding consumption,” and “promoting regional attraction,” new government targets for travel spending and regional accommodation numbers have been set. To achieve these goals, Japan will continue to engage in strategic inbound travel promotions while closely analyzing market trends.
