IPHONE TOUCH PAYMENT STARTS IN JAPAN
On May 16, 2024, Apple introduced “iPhone Touch Payment” in Japan, enabling contactless face-to-face payments using only an iPhone. This service is available to businesses of all sizes, from small enterprises to large retail stores, allowing them to accept payments through an employee’s iPhone. It supports contactless credit and debit cards, Apple Pay, and other digital wallets without the need for additional hardware or payment terminals.
To complete a payment, customers simply hold a compatible card or digital wallet over the iOS app on the iPhone at checkout. The Stera tap app, Air Pay Touch app, and Square POS cashier app are the initial payment platforms available in Japan. Additionally, contactless credit and debit cards from American Express, JCB, Mastercard, and Visa are supported.
