JAPANESE MOVIES TO BINGE THIS GOLDEN WEEK

For those who plan to stay at home for the rest of the holidays, here are some of our recommended movies you can watch on Netflix and other streaming platforms.

NETFLIX SERIES

HOUSE OF NINJAS (忍びの家)

This is available in Netflix, based on the story created by Kento Kaku, Yoshiaki Murao and Takafumi Imai. The storyline follows the Tawara family, practitioners of the ancient art of ninjutsu, residing in a traditional ninja dwelling in modern-day Japan. Following the tragic loss of their eldest son during a rescue mission, they forsake their ninja heritage in pursuit of a normal life. However, their attempts at normalcy are marred by lingering issues and peculiarities. As a new threat emerges, the family must confront their past and re-enter the shadowy world of ninjutsu.

SANCTUARY (サンクチュアリ-聖域)

The show depicts Enno, a novice wrestler burdened by debt and a turbulent family life, navigating the competitive world of professional sumo. Despite his disinterest in sumo and sole focus on monetary gain, he catches the eye of the Ensho stable master due to his natural talent and physique. However, his flamboyant personality and disregard for tradition draw criticism from sumo authorities as he rises through the ranks.

SUZUME (すずめの戸締り)

A film by the renowned director Makoto Shinkai. The movie tracks the journey of Suzume Iwato, a 17-year-old high school student, and a mysterious young man named Souta Munakata, as they join forces to thwart a string of disasters sweeping across Japan. Their mission involves sealing doors to contain a massive, supernatural worm responsible for causing earthquakes upon its release.

SHOGUN (将軍)

Shōgun depicts the encounter between two driven individuals from contrasting backgrounds: John Blackthorne, an adventurous English sailor who finds himself stranded in Japan, a land whose unfamiliar customs will reshape his identity; and Lord Toranaga, a cunning and influential daimyo, facing off against his treacherous political adversaries. Alongside them is Lady Mariko, a woman possessing invaluable talents but burdened by dishonorable familial connections, who must demonstrate her worth and loyalty.
