TRAVEL SPENDING BY FOREIGN VISITORS TO JAPAN REACHED AN ALL-TIME HIGH OF 5.3 TRILLION YEN IN 2023
The Japan Tourism Agency announced the final figures for the expenditure of foreign visitors to Japan in 2023. The spending reached a record high of 5.3065 trillion yen, a 10.2% increase from 2019. Additionally, the average expenditure per visitor (general tourists) also saw a significant rise of 34.2%, amounting to 213,000 yen.
By nationality/region, Taiwan led the spending with 783.5 billion yen (14.8% of the total), followed by China with 706.4 billion yen (14.3%), South Korea with 739.2 billion yen (13.9%), the United States with 607.0 billion yen (11.4%), and Hong Kong with 480.0 billion yen (9.0%). These top five countries/regions accounted for 63.5% of the total spending.In comparison, in 2019, Chinese visitors accounted for 36.8% of the total spending, with 1.7704 trillion yen.All major markets surpassed their 2019 spending, with notable increases from Singapore (101.2% increase to 171.4 billion yen), the United States (88.1% increase), Canada (76.2% increase to 118.1 billion yen), South Korea (74.1% increase), and the Philippines (67.4% increase to 110.3 billion yen).
Looking at the average expenditure per visitor by nationality/region, Australians spent the most at 341,000 yen, followed by Spaniards at 336,000 yen, and Italians at 334,000 yen. The most significant increase compared to 2019 was observed with Italian visitors, who spent 67.6% more.In terms of expenditure categories, accommodation costs were the highest at 1.8345 trillion yen (34.6% of the total), followed by shopping at 1.4043 trillion yen (26.5%), and food and beverage at 1.1955 trillion yen (22.5%). Compared to the same period in 2019, the proportion of accommodation costs increased, while shopping expenses decreased from 1.669 trillion yen in 2019.
