MORE THAN 2.78 MILLION FOREIGN TOURISTS VISITED JAPAN IN FEBRUARY, THE HIGHEST NUMBER EVER FOR FEBRUARY
In February, Japan saw a record-breaking influx of foreign tourists, with over 2.78 million visitors, marking the highest number for February ever recorded. This surge was primarily fueled by the Lunar New Year’s Spring Festival, which led to an increase in visitors from Asia, thereby boosting overall numbers.
According to the Japan National Tourism Organization (JNTO), the estimated number of foreign visitors in February was approximately 2,788,000. This represents the highest figure for February to date, and since the significant downturn in February 2020 due to the pandemic, this has been the highest single-month tally. The concurrent Lunar New Year’s Spring Festival and the additional day in leap years were significant factors contributing to this increase. By country and region, the statistics showed that:South Korea led the tally with 815,500 visitors, followed by Taiwan with 502,200, China with 459,400, and Hong Kong with 205,900, among others.
The JNTO stated that “Out of the 23 countries and regions surveyed, 19 recorded their highest numbers for February. The increase in visitors from South Korea, Taiwan, the Philippines, and the United States significantly propelled the overall numbers.”However, the number of Japanese nationals traveling abroad in February was 36% less than in the same month in 2019, before the pandemic, totaling 979,900. This slower recovery is attributed to factors such as the depreciating yen.
