2,688,100 FOREIGN VISITORS TO JAPAN IN JANUARY, RECORD HIGH FOR SOUTH KOREA AND THE UNITED STATES TOURISTS
The Japan National Tourism Organization announced on the 21st that the number of foreign visitors to Japan in January 2024 was 2,688,100.
Despite some impacts on travel to Japan from East Asia due to the Noto Peninsula earthquake, this number is about 1.8 times the figure of the same month the previous year and almost equal to January 2019’s 2,689,000 visitors, before the COVID-19 pandemic.
By country and region, the largest number of visitors in January came from South Korea, with 857,000 visitors, followed by Taiwan with 492,300, China with 415,900, Hong Kong with 186,300, and the United States with 131,800.
Compared to January 2019, significant increases were observed from Taiwan, Singapore, the Philippines, Australia, and the United States, with ten countries and regions setting record highs for January. On the other hand, the number of travelers from China was about half of January 2019’s figure (from 754,421 in January 2019 to 415,900 in January 2024), due in part to the slow recovery of flight services.
