TRAVEL CONSUMPTION IN 2023 WILL EXCEED 2019 AND REACHED RECORD HIGH
The Japan Tourism Agency announced on the 17th that the consumption amount (preliminary) for foreign visitors to Japan in the calendar year 2023 will be 5,292.3 billion yen (+9.9% compared to 2019), a new record high.
By nationality/region, Taiwan 778.6 billion yen (composition ratio 14.7%), China 759.9 billion yen (14.4%), South Korea 744.4 billion yen (14.1%), United States 606.2 billion yen (11.5%), Hong Kong 479.5 billion yen yen (9.1%), and these top five countries/regions accounted for 63.7% of the total.
“Foreigners visiting Japan” includes foreigners who visited Japan for business purposes, visiting relatives and acquaintances, in addition to sightseeing and leisure purposes. Foreigners residing in Japan are not included.
In 2023, the travel expenditure per foreign visitor to Japan (general visitor) was 212,193 yen (+33.8% compared to 2019).
