WARNING ALERTED, CONTINUED LARGE AFTERSHOCKS AFTER A MAGNITUDE OF 7.4 HIT SURIGAO DEL SUR
According to the Philippine Institute of Seismology and Volcanology, a magnitude 7.4 earthquake occurred at around 3:49 a.m. on the 4th, 63 kilometers east of Cagwait town, Surigao del Sur, Mindanao region. The depth of the epicenter was 10 km. No tsunamis have been confirmed.
Tremors of magnitude 4 (Japanese seismic intensity 3 to 4) were observed in Nabunturan town in Davao Oriental province, Bislig city in Surigao del Sur province and Surigao city in Surigao del Norte province. No injuries or significant damage have been reported yet but the institute urges people to continue to be careful of aftershocks.
At around 10:37 pm on the 2nd, a large M7.4 earthquake, said to be the strongest in the past 10 years, occurred in the town of Hinatuan. As of 5 a.m. on the 4th, the institute had already recorded 1,583 aftershocks. Large aftershocks continued with magnitude of 6.1 occurring at around 12:03 a.m. on the 3rd and magnitude 6.2 at around 1:40 a.m. and magnitude 6 at around 6:36 p.m.
