SPENDING BY FOREIGN VISITORS TO JAPAN FROM JULY TO SEPTEMBER EXCEEDS PRE-CORONAVIRUS LEVELS AND HITS RECORD HIGH
Inbound demand is recovering. The amount of money spent domestically by foreigners who visited Japan in the three months up to September this year was approximately 1.39 trillion yen, which is the highest amount ever spent in a three-month period, exceeding the amount before the coronavirus outbreak.
According to an announcement by the Japan Tourism Agency, the amount of money spent domestically by foreigners visiting Japan during the three months from July to September this year was 1,390.4 billion yen. The highest three-month consumption amount to date was 1,267.3 billion yen from April to June 2019, before the coronavirus pandemic, but this was the highest amount ever.
This is thought to be due to the rapid recovery in the number of foreigners visiting Japan and the recent depreciation of the yen, with the average consumption per person being 211,000 yen.
By country and region, the consumption amount increased by 2.18 times compared to the same period in 2019 in the Philippines, 2.09 times in South Korea, and 2 times in Singapore.
On the other hand, although the ban on group travel in China was lifted in August this year, the number is 40% lower than the same period in 2019, and the slow recovery is noticeable.
As a result, the consumption amount by foreigners from January to September this year will be approximately 3.6 trillion yen, and the focus will be on whether it will exceed the government’s annual target of 5 trillion yen.
