WORLD’S INTERNATIONAL HUB AIRPORT RANKING 2023, HANEDA AIRPORT RANKED 5TH OVERALL
The aviation data provider OAG has recently released the “Mega Hub Index 2023,” which ranks major airports worldwide based on the extensive network of international connecting flights they offer. This ranking focuses on major airports across the globe. Utilizing OAG’s comprehensive flight data, we assessed the number of cities that can be reached with a connecting flight within a 6-hour timeframe for a selection of 100 major airports worldwide, thereby evaluating their convenience as hub airports. The data for this assessment covers the period from September 2022 to August 2023.
The OAG Mega Hub Index ranks the top 10 mega hub airports as follows:
1st: Heathrow Airport (United Kingdom)
2nd: John F. Kennedy International Airport (USA)
3rd: Schiphol Airport (Netherlands)
4th: Kuala Lumpur International Airport (Malaysia)
5th: Haneda Airport (Tokyo, Japan)
6th: Frankfurt International Airport (Germany)
7th: Istanbul New Airport (Turkey)
8th: Incheon International Airport (South Korea)
9th: Charles de Gaulle International Airport (France)
10th: Chicago O’Hare Airport (USA)
Furthermore, the top 10 mega-hub airports for low-cost carrier (LCC) routes are outlined as follows:
1st: Kuala Lumpur International (Malaysia)
2nd: Incheon International Airport (South Korea)
3rd: Ninoy Aquino International Airport (Philippines)
4th: Singapore Changi Airport (Singapore)
5th: Soekarno-Hatta International Airport (Indonesia)
6th: Indira Gandhi International Airport (India)
7th: Dubai International Airport (United Arab Emirates)
8th: John F. Kennedy International Airport (USA)
9th: Barcelona – El Prat Airport (Spain)
10th: Sabiha Gokcen International Airport (Turkey)
Within the top 25 ranked LCC mega-hub airports, the Asia-Pacific region took the lead with the highest number of airports, totaling 13, which represents more than half of the total count. This phenomenon suggests a notable growth in LCC usage within this region, as stated by OAG. Within the Asia-Pacific region, South Asia holds the largest portion of LCC route offerings at 63%, followed closely by Southeast Asia at 53%.
