DIFFERENT TYPES OF EKIBEN
Eki bento are lunch boxes that come in various types, each offering a unique dining experience. Traditional Japanese bento typically includes rice, fish or meat, and vegetables. Western-style bentos might feature sandwiches, salads, and fruit. There are also creative bentos like character-themed ones for kids or kyaraben, and healthier options focusing on balanced nutrition. Let’s discuss the different types of bentos you can try in Japan.
1. Kanetsu shiki Eki bento 加熱式駅弁当
These are bentos with a string attached on the side. Before opening them, you have to pull the string so that the heating agent will be activated in less than 4 minutes. If you are the type who doesn’t like eating room-temperature food, then best to get the self-heating bentos before hopping on your train.
2. Character eki bento キャラ弁当
Typically marketed to children but of course, adults can also get them for themselves. These are bentos which are placed in cute character lunch boxes instead of the normal bento box. Some of the popular character bentos are bento with Japan shinkansen trains, Anpan man boxes or Rilakkuma.
3. Regional bento 当地弁当
This type of bento showcases the popular food on specific places in Japan. Famous regional bentos that you should give a try are the following:
Chubu ekiben which features the Hida beef and Matsuzaka beef bento
Kansai ekiben with their famous Kobe beef
Hokkaido ekiben with ikameshi
Whether you prefer classic, modern, or artistic, there’s a bento type to suit every taste and occasion.
