NUMBER OF FOREIGN VISITORS TO JAPAN (JUNE 2023 ESTIMATE)

- The number of foreign visitors to Japan in June was 2,073,300, 72.0% of the number in the same month of 2019, surpassing 2 million for the first time since February 2020, when the number of foreign visitors to Japan decreased significantly due to the spread of the new coronavirus infection. In addition, the cumulative total from January to June 2023 is 10,712,000, surpassing 10 million in the first half of the year.
- By region, the number of foreign visitors to Japan increased in East Asia, including Taiwan, and in Europe, the United States, Australia, and the Middle East, particularly in the United States and Australia, which showed a recovery exceeding that of the same month in 2019, were the factors boosting this month. Regarding regular international flights, as of the summer 2023 schedule, the number of flights has recovered to about 60% of the pre-coronavirus disaster, and since then, the number of flights has continued to increase and return, mainly to East Asia.
- Based on the new Tourism Nation Promotion Basic Plan (approved by the Cabinet on March 31, 2023), etc., it is necessary to increase the “earning power” of tourist destinations and the tourism industry in a sustainable manner, as well as promote the attraction of tourists to rural areas and the expansion of consumption, in order to revive the tourism nation. It is necessary for relevant parties in Japan to work together to strengthen efforts to promote high-value-added travel and adventure travel by strengthening sales to overseas travel agencies and disseminating information, and attracting MICE.
