“OUTBURST ERUPTION” BEGINS, REACHING 500 METERS FROM THE CRATER

“The Mayon Volcano in Albay Province, Philippines, has started to release lava from its crater, according to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology. This eruption is classified as an “effusive eruption” without significant explosions due to low gas content, resulting in less damage compared to explosive eruptions.

The eruption began on the 11th at 7:47 PM.The director of the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology, Mr. Bacolcol, stated on CNN Philippines that while the effusive eruption does not generate much volcanic ash, the flowing lava has reached up to 500 meters from the summit.

On the 12th, the Albay Province Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office extended the danger zone from the usual 6-kilometer radius from the crater to 7 kilometers. They issued a directive to the disaster management offices of the affected municipalities and barangays (smallest administrative divisions) within the zone, instructing them to conduct evacuation activities at any time. Evacuation advisories have already been issued at the town level, and 3,761 households comprising 10,348 individuals have been evacuated.

The current alert level (on a scale of 1 to 5) for Mayon Volcano is Level 3, indicating a likelihood of a hazardous eruption in the coming weeks. Mr. Ragma, the head of the Albay Province Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office, mentioned that due to the confirmed lava flow, there is a possibility that the alert level will be raised to Level 4 today. According to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology, Alert Level 4 is declared when there is a risk of the effusive eruption evolving into a hazardous eruption.”
